Citizenship

Citizenship refers to the legal citizenship status of a person. Canadian citizenship can be obtained by birth or by naturalization. Naturalization is the process through which immigrants acquire Canadian citizenship. Landed immigrants who have met certain criteria are eligible for Canadian citizenship by naturalization. The criteria for acquiring citizenship generally include a residency requirement, knowledge of English or French and basic knowledge of Canada.

Application Requirements

  1. Must be a permanent resident

  2. The applicant has lived in Canada for at least 3 out of the last 5 years (1,095 days)

  3. The applicant has filed taxes (If needed)

  4. Cannot have any unfulfilled conditions

  5. Must pass a citizenship test

  6. Meet minimum language levels (English / French)

List of Documents

  • Digital photos

  • Language test results (English / French)

  • A passport

  • Valid driver license

  • Notice of assessment (the past five years)

  • The applicant needs to submit the Physical Presence Calculation form
